A hit-and-run cycling accident didn’t stop Shayna Weitzman from pursuing her 140.6 mile dream.

This month, 43-year-old Shayna Weitzman will attempt an IRONMAN after spending the past year learning to walk again.
In June, 2011, Weitzman was riding with friends on a familiar route when she was hit by a SUV. “I woke up and told them I didn’t want to die,” she says, not recalling much else from the accident. Two collapsed lungs, broken ribs, and a broken collar bone puncturing her trachea, Weitzman faced a long road to recovery.
Through it all, her positive attitude and huge support network have carried Weitzman into the final weeks of training for IRONMAN Arizona this weekend. “The outpouring of love has been wonderful,” Weitzman says of her hometown, Ahwatukee, Phoenix. “I have a lot of motivation to get to the finish line and I know that on race day there will be many people on the course, spectating and cheering for me.” She’s also specially thankful for her partner, Maria, who has filled the role of caretaker, coach and confidante.
Despite the setbacks Weitzman faced following the accident, she found ways to remind herself of the silver lining in her situation. “I recently did a sprint triathlon and wrote ‘I’m blessed’ on my arm,” she says. “Whenever I had doubts about getting through the race, I looked down and saw that.” IRONMAN will surely provide ample opportunity to encounter challenges, but, according to Weitzman, none are greater than what she’s already overcome.

Part of her rehab was learning to walk again, which makes running the hardest part of her training. “Mentally, it’s frustrating not to be able to do things that I used to be able to do,” she says. “But on a personal level, I’m more appreciative for every day that I have.”
As for her training rides, Weitzman has chosen not to ride the same route where she was struck by the car. She also refuses to think about the woman who hit her. “It makes me angry and delays my healing process.” This mentality is part of the bigger problem cyclists face when sharing the road with motorists in an ever-busier world. “People are too distracted by their phones, their coffee, or getting some place in a hurry,” Weitzman says, who has since become an advocate for cyclist safety. Through her role with the Not One More foundation, Weitzman is working to increase awareness for cyclists on the road: “How would that woman feel about this if it had been her child, brother, sister or parent that was laying in the road after a hit-and-run?” Weitzman asks.
The driver that day may have impaired Weitzman’s fitness, but she hasn’t made a dent in her positive attitude and strong spirit. “She didn’t take anything away from me. I have been blessed to have healed so quickly, and to have had love and support to get me here,” Weitzman says, who’s going to rely on just that to get her through 140.6 miles this weekend in Tempe, Arizona, too.
