Prince Royce says his JOB is “…to keep Bachata going and to shake it up”!!!

My job is to continue to introduce it to the world.

“Bachata is still growing,” he confirms. “I like being a part of this movement, a part of this growth, to try to keep bachata going and to shake it up.

Prince Royce couldn’t have predicted this. An unknown artist at the top of 2010, the Bronx bachatero has since emerged as the artist to watch in 2011. His certified platinum self-titled debut has garnered a Latin Grammy nod (for Best Tropical Contemporary Album) and reigned on Billboard’s Tropical Album chart, capturing the No. 1 spot for 13 consecutive weeks. Although, most rookies would allow success to swell up their heads, Royce is taking it all in stride.

“It’s been a dream come true,” explains the humble 21-year-old, of Dominican descent. “I expected [my debut] to do good, but I didn’t expect it to go platinum…Well, not the first album!”

Geoffrey Royce Rojas road to success began as a freshman at Borough of Manhattan Community College, studying to be a teacher by day and distributing cellphones by night. The night gig afforded the aspiring singer/songwriter the opportunity to write and record music in his spare time. After posting one of his original songs to MySpace, Andrés Hidalgo (former manager of Aventura) discovered Rojas and urged the upstart to incorporate bachata into his routine. Reluctant at first, Royce quickly embraced the traditional music of his native land and infused it with the contemporary rhythms of his South Bronx neighborhood (reggaeton, pop, hip-hop and R&B).

After listening to just three songs off the disc, Royce’s enchanting vocals and seductive flare, was enough to convince George to sign the newbie to his imprint, Top Stop Music, in 2009. Two hits ensued. The first single, Royce’s bilingual/pop-tinged ode to Ben E. King timeless cut “Stand by Me” reached No.1 and became the first bachata song to receive spins on crossover radio in the U.S. The follow-up, “Corazóne Sin Cara” went on to melt every Latinas heart while ascending the charts.

Today, having spanned the globe-and-back, the baby-faced singer recently wrapped up European tour and headlined his first U.S. concert, in his hometown, at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Although, Prince Royce is proud of all he’s accomplished -in such a short time span- he affirms that there’s still work to be done. “Bachata is still growing,” he confirms. “I like being a part of this movement, a part of this growth, to try to keep bachata going and to shake it up. [My job] is to continue to introduce it to the world.”
